Hydration and Health - Drinking Tips for your Diet Plan

waterdrop.jpgDid you know that about fifty five to seventy percent of our total body mass is made up from water? This is a big amount and this amount of water needs to be replenished frequently. Therefore when you diet, do not cut down on the amount of liquid you drink, but check and see what it is exactly that you are drinking.

Many dieticians and physicians will tell you that water is the better choice in a diet and some even say that water can decrease your appetite. Some physicians say that we often have a tough time distinguishing between being hungry and being thirsty. And sometimes just drinking a glass of water when we think we are hungry might be the solution. Also, water will help fill your stomach and therefore you need less food to feel full. Water is essential for the proper functioning of the body and if you just loose a small amount, you might get dehydrated quicker than you think.

When on a diet plan, make sure to cut down or cut out all high calorie, sugared drinks such as coke and juices. Many of these products not only have high sugar content, they also contain caffeine. Caffeine is a well-known diuretic and will dehydrate your body before it knows that it is dehydrated. Some physicians even go so far to say that diet soft drinks are not good for you either. Some studies suggest that the sweeteners used in those drinks tell your body’s insulin that sugar is coming and if sugar is not coming, your insulin level will plummet and your body will tell you that you need sugar even though you do not.

If you are wondering now, how much water exactly you need, try the following. To calculate the approximate amount of water you should consume, take your bodies weight. Then divide this weight by two. The result you have is actually the amount of fluid ounces of water you should consume a day. A 150-pound person should drink around 75 ounces of water, which is around ten eight-ounce glasses or 5 regular size water drinking bottles.

One good tip from physicians might be to keep track of the water you drink. Record it for a few days and see if you drink enough for what you weigh. And this amount does not actually change too much over the year. You are supposed to drink this amount in winter and summer. Maybe even add a little in summer to cover the loss of liquid due to sweating.

If you are on a good diet and exercising plan, make sure to have the right amount of liquids. This might actually give you another few extra pounds off of the scale while you are dieting.

The liver and kidneys have essential functions in your body. One of the primary functions for the liver is to metabolize fat and keep it from being stored in your body. If you have not enough water, your kidneys cannot due their work and another function of the liver is to help your kidneys, when they cannot do all the work. Therefore if you drink to little during a diet you might actually tell your body to store fat, since the liver is not metabolizing the fat but rather helping the kidneys do their work.

So as you can see, there are many reasons, even essential reasons why you should drink plenty and make sure what you drink is good for you and your body. Water is one nutrient for your body that so far is still plentiful and can be found in so many versions.
